Experiencing Sleep Paralysis First Hand

A quiet night creeping in without warning, eyelids heavier than ever, suddenly a weight is felt on top of your body followed by horrible visions or disfigured figures in your room and somehow you are still in a state of dreaming but awake. Does this happen often enough for it to be associated with demons and ghosts? Or is it connected to the brain?

This condition is called sleep paralysis in the science world. It happens due to an irregularity in passing between the stages of sleep and wakefulness.

However so, from personal experiences, these paralysis trips are none like a rainbow dream made of cotton candy, the visions that come along with this are as horrifying as when nightmares come to life in front of your eyes and you are unable to make any movement.

I personally have felt this sleep paralysis for a whole month straight every night without the knowledge of it being a sleeping disorder.

This condition, according to our culture, is often linked to demons paying a visit to us at night, and so in those nights of horror, I was prepared to face the devil in the face.
It was until after a research of my condition through the net, that I found out sleep paralysis is a common sleeping disorder.

After figuring out about this condition, my sleep paralysis nights became less and less. It might be due to the fact that this sleep paralysis has shone a light on my sleeping issues.

Even so, the last time I opened my eyes during a sleep paralysis is when she saw a feminine figure leaning over her bed, wearing a torn up white dress, with a  disfigured black twisted face while opening it’s mouth. That was when I promised to myself to never try to peak through my eyelids while under paralysis.

However horrid the visions might be, the hearing is also affected, even with closed eyes, you would not be able to escape the voices that come along with the hallucinations.

Although this condition is ruled out by science as a sleeping disorder connected to narcolepsy and other sleeping issues, religion wise, it is still associated with the devil playing its tricks on us mere human beings.

In the debate between science and religion will never truly subside. Therefore it is up to us to whether we lean more to religion concepts of this issue or the science’s side.

Prevention are possible as this disorder is linked to sleep deprivation, stress and insomnia, as well as sleeping in the supine position.

Sleep paralysis may be new to us Malaysians, as culture seems to be in the way, however, it is normal and poses no serious health threats although it could be a terrifying experience.
