In this month’s issue, the theme freedom is especially high anticipated in Malaysia, as our independence day is just around the corner. The definition of freedom can differ in everyone, whether its freedom for the country, for oneself or for the color of your skin.
In this article, we open our eyes to the word ‘Freedom’ by peering into the background story of two famous films bellow.

Selma (2014)


This brilliant movie directed by Ava DuVernay portrays a time when Civil Rights Act 1964 was signed and how the South’s discrimination towards blacks were still widespread, making it difficult for the people to register to vote. This film follows the journey of Dr. Marti Luther King in fighting for the African American’s right to decide their future, thus ensure freedom on their part.

This film is based on the true story of how Selma fought for their voices to be heard. In this modern era, racism has not been distinguished entirely. Through the recent cases of the murders of black lives, it seems as if the history may be repeating itself.

This artwork is a must watch! The depiction of hardship through this movie is one that needs to be acknowledged and appreciated. Independence should be attained together. Selma is rated 99% by Rotten Tomatoes and 7.5/10 by IMDb. Kanese gives it 4/5 for its true definition of freedom.



Wild (2014)


Directed by Jean-Marc Valee, Wild is based on Cheryl Strayed‘s (Reese Witherspoon) struggle in finding herself after the loss of her mother (Laura Dern). Cheryl decided on hiking her way through the Pacific Crest Trail in hopes of finding her true self, while fixing herself from her self-destructive behavior.

This movie made it into this article due to the undeniable factor in finding your own path is most likely leading to freeing your own self. Cheryl tries her best to be a better human being a soon as she realized her life was heading downhill. She took the initiative to embrace change. In a way, this is her representation of freedom.

This film will fill your eyes with tears and not enough tissue boxes would help dry your soul. Wild is a touching movie that will move every soft bone in you. It is easily a 4.5/5 stars. A must see film to get you motivated to start living!
